Water Saving Facts

The Village of Senneville wishes to raise awareness among its population on the value of water and the importance of reducing its consumption.

Less than 1% of the water supply can be used as drinking water, therefore use water efficiently and avoid waste.

Here are some useful water-saving measures for our drinking water.

Did you know…

That people living in Quebec are among the biggest water consumers in the world; 401 liters per person, per day! The average Ontarian uses about 267 liters every day.

Every time you flush your toilet you take up approximately 40% of the potable water in your home?

A drop of water leaking from a faucet every second, represents approximately 9 540 liters of wasted water which equals up to 80 short showers lasting about 5 minutes each?

You can save approximately 5 000 liters of water per year (2 500 liters of hot water) just by installing low flow aerators faucets.

During the Summer, lawn watering constitutes a large part of the water consumption and it represents 75% of the municipalities treated water.

In July, your lawn goes into a dormant mode, not only should it not be fertilized during this period but it should only receive a limited amount of watering.

85 % of problems related to landscaping are consequences of excessive watering.

After a good rainfall, your grass does not need to be watered for at least a week.

A water hose delivers 1000 liters per hour, which is equivalent to the quantity of water a person drinks in three years.

Longer grass requires less water and it maintains a better appearance.

How to reduce your water consumption

Indoors

Instead of leaving the faucet running until the water is cold, keep a water jug in the refrigerator.

Clean your vegetables with the help of a small brush and a water container.

Only start your dishwasher when it is full.

Do the same with your clothes washer.

While you are brushing your teeth, shaving, washing your face or your hands, close the faucet, you will save up to 12 liters of water per minute.

Take a quick 5 minute shower instead of a 15 minute one, you will save up to 200 liters of water every time.

Make sure your toilet does not have a leak. Put a few drops of food coloring in the tank, if the water in the bowl is colored, you have a leak.

If you still have a toilet with a water tank of 6 liters or more, put a one or two liter bottle filled with water or sand in the water tank. This will reduce the volume of water required at every flush.

If you can, replace all of your old toilets for new ones with reduced water flow, you will save up to 11 000 liters of water every year.

Outdoors

Instead of hosing off your driveway, sweep the dirt away with a broom.

When cleaning your car use a bucket of water instead of a water hose, you will save up to 300 liters of water.

Collect rain water in a barrel to wash your terrace, to water your garden, to water your grass. You will save up to 6000 liters of water per year.

Water your lawn two hours at a time, preferably very early in the morning when the ground is still covered in dew.
